Dr Amy Izycky
professional
philosophy
Dr. Izycky’s professional philosophy is rooted in evidence-based neuroscience and neuropsychology, with a core focus on wellness and balance. She views the mind and body as an inseparable “system” and believes that the vulnerabilities and traumas which often drive high performance must be recognised for their impact on brain development, cognition and physiology.
A central theme of her work is the management of the nervous system. She observes that high-pressure environments often leave individuals in an “upregulated” or “tired but wired” state, dominated by the sympathetic nervous system. Her approach encourages engaging the parasympathetic nervous system through physical and psychological practices – such as Yoga Nidra and IFS – to transition from dysregulation toward stability, peace, and cognitive sharpening. She maintains that vulnerability is an individual’s greatest asset, provided they can witness and notice it with compassion.

Career path and history
Dr. Izycky’s career path was heavily influenced by her background in competitive swimming and high-performance rowing at Durham University, where she trained with the GB Development Coach. While competing, she began her psychological studies, gaining early insight into how sporting cultures can sometimes normalise unhealthy behaviours. This led her to pursue a Masters in Developmental Psychopathology, which initiated her work with high performers in rowing and cricket.
Her expertise evolved through her Doctorate and PGDip in Neuropsychology, where she focused on the interplay between biology and psychology. In 2021, she authored Skewed to the Right: Sport, Mental Health & Vulnerability, a book exploring how specific personality structures and trauma drive high performers. Her practice has since expanded to include work with the World’s Strongest Men, Premiership, Championship and International Footballers, England and County Cricketers, and Qatar Racing. She has also written for The Guardian newspaper.
An unforeseen lived experience further deepened her commitment to and training in trauma and nervous system regulation, leading her to integrate somatic work into her clinical practice. Currently, Dr. Izycky is authoring her second book, High Performance in Balance, which serves as a follow-up to Skewed to the Right. In this upcoming publication, she integrates her collective personal and professional knowledge to help readers understand how to create a regulated system – both mind and body – that is in balance and optimises wellbeing, peace, and performance without the negative consequences of addiction or poor mental health.
